Contextual Maps for Civic Engagement

Byron South
Saturday, 11:10am – 20 min

Maps are fundamentally political but their politics are often hidden underneath—what we surfaced it? What would that even mean?

What if our maps didn’t just tell us that the nearest park was 5 blocks away, but also told us that next week the city council would be considering a bond measure to fund renovations? What if they didn’t just tell us when we needed to be routed around construction but when construction was being considered and the Department of Transportation was requesting public comment?

I want to explore ideas around how maps can be used as a tool for citizenship education and expanding civic engagement. And how we can imbue our own meaning into the maps of our communities.

What if political maps, but more?
