Provide an overview of a new University of Colorado (CU) Grand Challenge Initiative called Earth Lab. Earth Lab is an Earth systems synthesis center housed in the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences at CU focused on harnessing the tremendous amount of scientific data being collected from satellites, aircraft and field studies to observe the pace and pattern of environmental change. The process of extracting meaningful information from these data is complex and the data sets remain difficult to work with. Earth lab brings researchers, and experts in remote sensing, data science, and computing and visualization together with advanced computing technology to accelerate understanding of our changing environment through research, data mining, geospatial analytics, and education to help society better manage and adapt.
